About Our Studio
Welcome to Yaquina Barre Dance Studio! YBD offers a nurturing community for dancers of all ages and skill levels to explore the beautiful art of dance. We're committed to helping you discover your unique artistic voice through movement.
Located in Newport, on the Central Coast of Oregon, we pride ourselves on creating a space where creativity flourishes and joy is cultivated. Whether you're taking your first dance steps or refining advanced techniques, our studio is your home for artistic growth.
Originally, Teri Jernigan's Dance! And All That Jazz! (DAATJ) was established in 1978 and grew to become the largest dance studio on the Oregon Coast. The studio, located in Newport's historic Skating Rink, built in 1907, was remodeled into an updated, fully-equipped dance facility with 4 separate studios. After nearly 50 years of passion, artistry, and dazzling performances under the direction of Teri Jernigan, the studio is now under the care of Jessica Steenkolk and Kerry de Lisser-Shanks. In 2025, the studio, renamed Yaquina Barre Dance Studio, is striving to continue Teri's mission and magic in our beachside community.
YBD offers classes from beginning to advanced levels of experience in Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, and Teen/Adult Tap. There is also a fun Creative Dance option available for the little folks that are 3, 4, and 5 years of age.

Early Childhood & Foundations
Where every dancer begins. Imagination, movement, and classroom confidence for our youngest students, building toward genre-specific training.
Creative Dance (Ages 3–4)
Our Creative Dance program is the perfect introduction to the world of dance! Designed especially for our youngest dancers, this class encourages imagination, creativity, musicality, and movement through age-appropriate activities and games.
Dancers will begin learning fundamental movement skills such as skipping, galloping, jumping, balancing, and coordination while developing rhythm, listening skills, and confidence in a positive and nurturing environment. We also introduce simple classroom routines and etiquette to help children become comfortable learning in a structured class setting.
Our goal is to inspire a lifelong love of dance while building the social, physical, and emotional skills that prepare dancers for future training.
Intro to Dance (Ages 5–6)
Intro to Dance builds on the creativity and movement introduced in our Creative Dance program. This class focuses on developing stronger coordination, balance, flexibility, musicality, and body awareness.
Students begin learning foundational dance terminology and technique while continuing to explore movement in a fun and encouraging environment. This class introduces children to classroom expectations, independence, focus, and following instruction as dancers prepare for progression into our Foundations program.
This class helps children develop the confidence, discipline, and technical skills needed for continued success in dance.
Foundations (Ages 6 and up)
Foundations is the next step for young dancers who are ready for a more structured class experience. Building on our Intro to Dance program, this class continues to focus on developing stronger coordination, balance, flexibility, musicality, and body awareness.
Greater emphasis is placed on classroom expectations, independence, focus, and following instruction as dancers prepare for progression into our genre-specific programs (Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Musical Theatre).
This class helps children develop the confidence, discipline, and technical skills needed for continued success in dance. For dancers to advance beyond this level, they must be able to follow classroom etiquette.
Ballet
Master the foundation of all dance forms with classical ballet technique, focusing on grace, strength, and artistic expression.
Ballet Opal (Ages 7+)
Ballet Opal is designed for dancers who are ready to begin formal ballet training. This class introduces the essential building blocks of classical ballet, including posture, alignment, turnout, balance, flexibility, musicality, and basic ballet vocabulary.
In addition to learning technique, dancers develop important classroom habits such as focus, respect, self-discipline, and the ability to participate in a full one-hour class with confidence and independence. Students remain in this class until they have demonstrated the technical skills, classroom etiquette, and maturity needed to advance into our Sapphire ballet program.
This class provides the strong technical foundation every dancer needs for long-term growth and success.
Ballet Sapphire
Ballet Sapphire is the next level of training following Ballet Opal and is designed for dancers who have developed the focus, discipline, and classroom skills needed for more structured ballet instruction. This class builds upon foundational technique while introducing more challenging barre work, center exercises, across-the-floor progressions, and artistry.
Throughout the year, dancers will continue to strengthen their posture, alignment, turnout, balance, flexibility, and coordination while expanding their ballet vocabulary and musical understanding. Students will develop greater confidence performing combinations, improve movement quality and control, and learn to dance with expression and artistry.
By the end of the year, dancers should demonstrate a solid understanding of fundamental ballet technique, increased strength and flexibility, the ability to retain longer combinations, and the confidence to participate successfully in a full-length ballet class. Ballet Sapphire prepares dancers for the increasing technical demands of our intermediate ballet program while fostering a love for disciplined, artistic training.
Ballet Emerald & Ruby
Ballet Emerald & Ruby is an intermediate to advanced ballet class designed for dancers who have developed a strong technical foundation and are ready to refine their classical ballet training. This class builds upon the skills learned in Ballet Foundations and Ballet Sapphire, focusing on increased strength, control, musicality, and artistic expression.
Dancers will continue to develop proper alignment, turnout, flexibility, balance, and coordination while progressing through more complex barre work, center exercises, adagio, turns, jumps, and across-the-floor combinations. Emphasis is placed on technical precision, clean execution, body awareness, and the ability to retain and perform longer combinations with confidence.
Although Emerald and Ruby dancers train together, each level receives age- and skill-appropriate expectations, corrections, and choreography. Ruby dancers will be challenged with increased technical demands and performance expectations, while Emerald dancers will continue developing the skills needed to progress toward the next level of training.
This class is designed for dedicated dancers who are committed to improving their technique, accepting corrections, and developing the discipline, artistry, and confidence required for continued ballet growth.
Jazz
Express yourself through energetic jazz movement, combining technical skill with contemporary style and rhythm.
Jazz Opal (Ages 7+)
Jazz Opal is the starting point for dancers beginning their jazz training. Students learn the core fundamentals of jazz technique, including proper body alignment, strength, flexibility, coordination, rhythm, and basic jazz vocabulary.
Alongside technical development, dancers build the classroom skills necessary for future advancement, including listening, following combinations, demonstrating respect, and participating successfully in a full one-hour class. Students progress from Jazz Opal once they have developed the technical understanding, work habits, and classroom etiquette required for our Sapphire level classes.
This class creates a strong technical and personal foundation, helping dancers build confidence while preparing them for more advanced jazz training.
Jazz Sapphire
Jazz Sapphire is the next stage of training following Jazz Opal and is designed for dancers who have demonstrated the technical skills, focus, and classroom discipline needed for more challenging instruction. This class builds upon fundamental jazz technique while introducing more complex turns, leaps, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations.
Throughout the year, dancers will continue to refine their posture, alignment, flexibility, strength, and coordination while expanding their jazz vocabulary and musical understanding. Students will learn to execute movement with greater precision, control, and confidence while developing performance quality and artistic expression.
By the end of the year, dancers should be able to demonstrate proper jazz posture and alignment, execute clean jazz walks, chassés, and pivots, perform consistent single pirouettes, chainé turns, and piqué turns with control, demonstrate proper leap preparation and safe landings, and perform longer combinations with musicality, confidence, and expression.
Jazz Sapphire provides the strong technical foundation needed for continued advancement, preparing dancers for the increasing demands of our intermediate jazz program while fostering confidence, discipline, and a genuine love of dance.
Jazz Emerald & Ruby
Jazz Emerald & Ruby is an intermediate to advanced training class designed for dancers who have developed a strong technical foundation and are ready to refine their skills through more challenging instruction. This combined class allows Emerald dancers to be inspired and challenged while providing Ruby dancers with opportunities to strengthen their artistry, leadership, and technical consistency.
Classes focus on advancing jazz technique through more complex turns, leaps, flexibility, strength, conditioning, and intricate across-the-floor progressions. Dancers are encouraged to develop greater musicality, performance quality, and confidence while learning to execute movement with precision, control, and intention.
Although Emerald and Ruby dancers train together, each level is given age- and skill-appropriate expectations. Choreography and performance material are tailored to each group's level to ensure every dancer continues to grow and be challenged appropriately.
This class is designed for committed dancers who are ready to work hard, embrace corrections, and continue developing both the technical excellence and artistic expression needed for advanced jazz training.
Contemporary
Explore fluid, expressive movement that blends ballet technique with modern dance innovation and emotional storytelling.
Contemporary Emerald & Ruby
Contemporary Emerald & Ruby is an intermediate to advanced class for dancers who are ready to explore movement beyond traditional technique while continuing to build strength, versatility, and artistry. Drawing from both ballet and jazz, contemporary dance blends technical precision with creativity, emotion, and expressive movement.
Classes focus on developing fluidity, control, floor work, balance, coordination, improvisation, musicality, and dynamic movement quality. Dancers are challenged through technical exercises, choreography, and creative exploration that encourage both physical growth and artistic expression.
Because contemporary technique is built upon a strong technical foundation, previous training in Ballet or Jazz is required before enrolling in this class. Dancers should already possess the discipline, body awareness, and technical fundamentals needed to safely execute contemporary movement.
This class is ideal for dedicated dancers who are eager to challenge themselves artistically, embrace creative expression, and continue growing as confident, versatile performers. Emerald and Ruby dancers train together in a supportive environment, with choreography and expectations tailored to each dancer's level to ensure continued growth and appropriate challenge.
Hip Hop
Energetic, expressive, and rooted in rhythm, style, and individuality. Unlike classical dance forms, hip hop is street-style based, and ever-evolving.
Hip Hop Opal (Ages 8+)
Hip Hop Opal is the perfect introduction for dancers who want to explore the energy, creativity, and individuality of hip hop dance. This class introduces students to the fundamentals of hip hop movement, including grooves, rhythm, coordination, musicality, basic footwork, and age-appropriate choreography.
Students will learn how to move with confidence, develop their own style, and understand how movement connects with different types of music. Along with learning hip hop vocabulary, dancers will build important classroom skills such as focus, teamwork, respect, and following instruction.
This class creates a positive and encouraging environment where dancers can build confidence, express themselves, and develop the foundation needed to continue growing as hip hop performers.
Hip Hop Sapphire
Hip Hop Sapphire is designed for dancers who have developed the foundational skills and classroom confidence needed to continue progressing in hip hop. This class challenges dancers through more advanced choreography, musicality, performance quality, and individual expression.
Students will continue developing their understanding of grooves, dynamics, rhythm, coordination, and hip hop styles while learning more complex combinations and performance material. Emphasis is placed on confidence, teamwork, stage presence, and the ability to perform choreography with energy, personality, and authenticity.

Musical Theatre Sapphire
Musical Theatre Sapphire is designed for students who are ready to continue developing their performance skills through singing, acting, movement, and choreography. Building on the foundations learned in Opal level Musical Theatre, students will explore character work, stage presence, ensemble skills, and performance confidence.
Students will learn musical theatre choreography, develop their ability to tell a story through movement and expression, and gain a better understanding of what makes a successful performer. While this class incorporates dance and movement, the focus is on creativity, confidence, collaboration, and enjoying the performance experience.
This class is a great fit for students who love to perform and want to continue growing as well-rounded musical theatre artists in a supportive environment.

Musical Theatre Emerald & Ruby is designed for dedicated performers who are ready to further develop their skills in acting, singing, movement, and stage performance. This class focuses on more advanced character development, storytelling, choreography, ensemble work, and building confidence as a performer.
While Musical Theatre emphasizes creativity and performance rather than a traditional technical dance curriculum, students will be challenged to grow in stage presence, commitment, teamwork, and performance quality. This class is ideal for students who enjoy performing and want to strengthen their skills as a well-rounded musical theatre artist.

Adult Jazz & Contemporary
Adult Jazz & Contemporary is a performance-based class designed for adult dancers with previous dance experience who are looking to continue training, moving, and performing in a supportive environment.
This class combines jazz technique, contemporary movement, musicality, and expressive choreography. Students will work on strength, flexibility, coordination, turns, movement quality, and performance skills while exploring different styles and approaches to choreography.
Previous dance experience in jazz, ballet, or contemporary is recommended, as classes move at a pace designed for dancers who are comfortable with foundational technique and dance terminology.
This is a performing class, giving dancers the opportunity to learn choreography, challenge themselves, and share their love of dance with others. Performance is not a requirement.
Adult Ballet (75 Minutes)
Adult Ballet is a technique-focused class designed for adults who want to experience the beauty, discipline, and benefits of classical ballet in a welcoming environment. Beginners are welcome!
Class begins with barre work focused on alignment, posture, strength, flexibility, balance, and proper ballet technique. Students may choose to participate in the full class or attend barre only, depending on their goals and comfort level.
For those continuing through the full class, dancers will explore center work, across-the-floor exercises, turns, balancé, bourrée, chaîné turns, and other foundational ballet movements designed to build confidence, coordination, and musicality.
This is not a performing class. The focus is on personal growth, technique, movement quality, and enjoying the lifelong benefits of ballet in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Studio Policies
Everything families need to know before the first class. Tap any card below to read the full policy.
Attendance Policy
Absence allowances, makeup classes, performance eligibility, and our late arrival and early departure rules.
Dance is a discipline developed through consistent training, practice, and applying instructor feedback. Regular attendance is essential for technical growth, choreography, stage placement, performance quality, and confidence.
We understand that school, family, and personal commitments are important, and we strive to support well-rounded students.
Tech Week & Performance
All dancers are required to attend both Tech Week and dress rehearsal the week of the recitals if they are performing. Students unable to be present for the entirety of the shows, including the finale, must have their parent/guardian fill out a release form at least one week before the recitals listing the name of the guardian that is authorized to sign the dancer out early from the performance venue.
Attendance Expectations
- Each dancer is allowed up to four (4) excused absences per class, per season.
-
Excused absences include:
- Required school activities
- Religious holidays
- Illness
- Family emergencies
- Pre-planned family vacations
Excused absences beyond the four allotted must be made up by attending an appropriate makeup class. Makeup classes may be taken in any appropriate class and must be completed before April 1 of the current season.
Performance Eligibility
Consistent attendance is necessary for dancers to safely and successfully perform choreography.
- Dancers who accumulate more than eight (8) absences in a class during the season may be removed from that class's performance, regardless of whether makeup classes have been completed.
- Dancers who miss more than three (3) consecutive classes may be removed from the performance, as extended absences can significantly impact choreography, spacing, and group readiness.
- Dancers with excessive absences may, at YBD's discretion, be moved to a lower-level class if it is determined to be in the dancer's best interest.
- YBD reserves the right to determine a dancer's performance eligibility based on attendance, preparedness, and the ability to safely and confidently perform the choreography.
Reporting an Absence
Please notify the studio of all absences by emailing ybdancellc@gmail.com.
Late Arrival & Early Departure
Arriving late causes dancers to miss warm-up, which increases the risk of injury and affects their ability to fully participate in class.
- Dancers arriving more than 10 minutes late will be required to observe class and will not participate that day.
- Dancers leaving more than 5 minutes before the end of class will be marked absent.
This policy is especially important during sports seasons and other extracurricular activities. Choreography must be learned directly from the instructor to ensure proper technique, spacing, and consistency. Dancers who leave early miss critical instruction and should not rely on other students to learn choreography.
Enrollment & Tuition Policy
Enrollment and withdrawal rules, monthly tuition and multi-class discounts, due dates and late fees, and what is and isn't refundable.
Enrollment
A credit card on file is required for enrollment. Tuition automatically runs on the 1st of each month unless other payment arrangements have been made with the front desk manager.

Written notice may be sent by email to ybdancellc@gmail.com.

Dance Attire
Required clothing, shoes, and hair for every style we teach — Ballet, Jazz & Contemporary, Tap, Hip-Hop, Musical Theatre, Creative and Intro.
Dancers should arrive at their dance classroom dressed and ready for class. Proper dance attire promotes safety, allows instructors to accurately assess technique and body alignment, and helps create a focused learning environment. Clothing should be clean, fitted, and appropriate for each style of dance. Hair should be pulled back, as ponytails and hair in the face impact the ability to learn to spot and see where you are going.
- Clothing must allow instructors to clearly see body alignment and movement. Baggy clothing that obstructs technique is not permitted, unless otherwise allowed for Hip-Hop.
- Jewelry should be kept to a minimum for safety.
- Dance shoes should be worn only inside the studio to help protect our dance floors.
- Dancers who arrive without the required attire or proper footwear may be asked to observe or sit out of class at the instructor's discretion.
Hair Requirements
Ballet
- Hair must be neatly secured in a proper ballet bun.
Jazz & Contemporary
- Hair must be secured away from the face and off the neck.
- A ballet bun or tight braids are preferred.
All Other Styles, Including Creative & Intro to Dance
- Hair must be secured away from the face and off the neck.
Short hairstyles must still be secured with clips or bobby pins so hair is off of the dancer's face and neck.

- Optional fitted black ballet wrap top may be worn during colder months

Important: Tap shoes are for studio use only. Wearing tap shoes outdoors damages the taps, which can scratch and damage the studio floors.

- No tight jeans, skirts, boots, flip-flops, elevated shoes, or street shoes

- Outdoor shoes are not permitted on the dance floor
- No socks or bare feet if dance shoes are forgotten

- No street shoes, boots, sandals, flip-flops, elevated shoes, or socks worn without shoes
Creative Dance & Intro to Dance
Our Creative Dance and Intro to Dance classes are designed to build a strong foundation for future dance training. Establishing proper dress habits at an early age helps dancers focus, move safely, and prepare for advancement into higher-level classes.
Attire
- A black leotard with pink or skin-tone tights is preferred
- Fitted leggings may be worn in place of tights when paired with a leotard or fitted dance top
- No dresses or skirts, as they can be distracting and interfere with movement during class
Shoes
- Ballet slippers are required
- No socks. Ballet slippers should be worn directly on the feet for proper fit and safety
Hair
- Hair must be secured away from the face and off the neck. A ballet bun is encouraged to help establish good dance habits from the beginning.
Is Your Dancer Ready? (Ages 3–5)
Readiness standards to help you decide whether your child is developmentally prepared for a structured dance class.
Purpose
These standards help determine when a child is developmentally ready to participate successfully and enjoyably in structured dance classes. They focus on attention, coordination, listening, and social interaction — skills that allow children to benefit from instruction while maintaining a positive class environment.
1. Physical Readiness
The child can:
- Move independently without assistance (walk, run, jump, hop, and balance safely)
- Follow simple physical directions (for example, "put your arms up," "touch your toes")
- Show basic coordination and body awareness — knows where their body is in space and can avoid bumping into others
- Participate in 30–45 minutes of light to moderate movement
- Demonstrate emerging rhythm and the ability to move to a steady beat
2. Cognitive & Listening Skills
The child can:
- Understand and follow 1–2 step instructions without constant prompting
- Recognize and imitate simple movement patterns shown by a teacher
- Focus attention for 3–5 minutes at a time on a single task or activity
- Remember and repeat short movement sequences
3. Social & Emotional Readiness
The child can:
- Separate from a parent or caregiver with minimal distress
- Participate cooperatively in a small group — take turns and share space
- Show curiosity and willingness to try new movements
- Handle simple corrections or redirection positively
- Demonstrate respect for others and follow class rules, such as not running off and staying in line
4. Behavioral Readiness
The child shows:
- Consistent interest in music and movement activities
- Ability to enter class calmly and transition between activities
- Willingness to listen to and follow the teacher's lead
- Safe behavior during class — no pushing, hitting, or unsafe running
- Appropriate use of language and gestures in class settings
5. Optional Pre-Class Indicators
Before enrolling, a child might already:
- Enjoy moving or dancing at home or in play settings
- Respond naturally to music or rhythm
- Express interest in taking dance lessons or watching others dance
A Note for Parents
Dance readiness is about developmental stage, not age. Some children may be ready at 3, while others thrive best starting at 4 or 5. Readiness ensures your child enjoys learning, builds confidence, and develops a lifelong love of movement.
Is Your Dancer Ready? (Ages 6–8)
Readiness cues for the move into structured ballet, jazz, and tap classes — focus, motor control, and classroom discipline.
Purpose
Dance readiness is based on developmental readiness, focus, and motor control rather than age alone. The cues below help you judge whether your child is prepared for a basic ballet, jazz, or tap class setting.
1. Physical Readiness
Children entering beginner ballet should be able to:
- Demonstrate coordination and balance in both stationary and traveling movements
- Hold basic body positions with control (first position, parallel, plié, relevé)
- Follow instructions for posture — straight back, lifted chin, arms rounded
- Move in time with a steady beat and respond to tempo changes in music
- Understand spatial awareness — knows where to stand and how to move in a line or circle
- Sustain 45–60 minutes of light to moderate activity with focus
- Begin to demonstrate flexibility and safe stretching habits
2. Cognitive & Listening Skills
Students are ready when they can:
- Follow multi-step instructions (for example, "stand in first, plié twice, then point your toe")
- Remember and repeat short ballet sequences or combinations
- Identify and use basic ballet terminology such as plié, tendu, and relevé
- Pay attention for longer periods — 7–10 minutes per activity
- Understand class structure and follow transitions (barre → center → across the floor)
3. Social & Emotional Readiness
Students benefit most when they can:
- Respect the teacher and classmates
- Work cooperatively in lines, pairs, or small groups
- Accept correction politely and apply feedback
- Participate without frequent need for parent support
- Show pride in effort, persistence, and self-control
- Maintain a positive attitude toward learning new or challenging skills
4. Behavioral Readiness
Students should demonstrate:
- Ability to enter class calmly and prepare to dance
- Consistent listening and following of classroom etiquette — no talking out of turn, raising a hand, waiting for the music to start
- Awareness of personal space and safety when moving
- Responsibility for personal belongings such as shoes and water bottle
- Willingness to try each activity, even if uncertain or new
5. Artistic & Musical Awareness
A ready ballet student often:
- Enjoys moving expressively to classical or lyrical music
- Responds to musical rhythm, phrasing, and emotion
- Begins to show control in arm and head placement
- Demonstrates interest in performing, storytelling, or expressive movement
A Note for Parents
Between ages 6–8, children transition from exploratory movement to structured learning. These readiness skills help them thrive in a ballet setting, where attention, discipline, and joy of movement come together. If a child is still developing some of these skills, an Intro to Dance or Foundations class may be a great starting point.
